POWDERLY, Tex. (KXII) -- For many years, a Lamar county man has held a leading role at a volunteer fire department and helped them raise thousands for equipment and training.
Now, that same fire department is returning the favor.
Powderly volunteer fire department assistant chief Ed Handley has been with the department for over two decades.
His wife, Lona, has too.
But this summer, she was diagnosed with chronic myeloid leukemia over the summer.
For years, Ed has been an organizer for the Powderly Chili Supper, that this year raised over $30,000.
Powderly fire is banding together to put on a fundraiser for Ed and Lona on Saturday, October 12 at 4 p.m. at Drake's Party Barn.
Admission is ten dollars and covers food and live music.
All proceeds will go to help pay for Lona's medical bills.
