Grayson commissioners vote to background check DA applicants
Grayson County commissioners hired an investigative firm on Tuesday to conduct background checks on the applicants for interim district attorney.
First Assistant DA Kerye Ashmore and Assistant DA Brett Smith applied for the interim position earlier this month after elected District Attorney Joe Brown resigned to become a U.S. Attorney.
Judge Bill Magers said commissioners took applications because the law states they will appoint the person to fill the position.
Commissioners went into executive session and chose Danny Defenbaugh as the investigator to check the backgrounds of both candidates.
Defenbaugh worked in the FBI for 33 years.
Magers says the law also requires a background check for candidates running for interim DA.
