Harvest reporting of alligator gar now required by law in Texas

A new app is helping fisherman easily enter the harvest report for alligator gar on their smartphones.

Fisheries biologist Dan Bennett says harvest information is hard to get for these fish, and that it is now required to report the harvest of alligator gar within 24 hours in Texas thanks to a new law that went into effect September 1.

Bennett says he hopes that the app, called My Texas Hunt Harvest, will make that easier to do.

“Hopefully most folks will comply with that and we'll be able to better serve them and the alligator gar through conserving those populations for a number of years," Bennett said.

Fishermen can also report alligator gar harvesting on the Texas Parks and Wildlife website.
