SHERMAN, Tex. (KXII) - John Singleton works for a company that manages retail liquidation, and was working on a project in Michigan.
He said he wasn't shocked when his company told him he would be without a job indefinitely due to the coronavirus, and has been trying to get help finding a job with Workforce Solutions Texoma.
"As of about an hour ago, I tried calling 160-something times. Either the phone is busy or it says the call can't be completed," said Singleton.
"The unemployment numbers telephone system has crashed a few times just due to the volume of people who are being laid off," said Workforce Solutions Executive Director Janie Bates.
Bates says 35,000 people are filing for unemployment.every day in Texas.
However, she wants people to know there are still hundreds of jobs available, from retail to trade positions, in Grayson,Cooke, and Fannin Counties.
"When people get laid off, rather than trying to sit around trying to find unemployment, we have jobs where you can go to work right away," said Bates.
Singleton says his company assured him he will eventually get his job back, but doesn't know when that may be.
"I can't imagine that it would happen in the next 30-60 days," said Singleton.
