SHERMAN, Texas (KXII) - There have been 21 people charged with drunk driving over the past week alone in Texoma. And two city councilors were arrested for drunk driving this week: Ben Vincent from Tom Bean, who injured a man, and Carmen Roberts from Celina.
But there are other options to get home safely before getting behind that wheel after a night out.
"Call us… true friends will help each other out," said Malinda Yeargain, who has co-owned and managed City Cab of Sherman with her husband since 2008.
"We've been around for almost 10 years now," she said. "We still get comments like, 'Oh, I never knew there was a taxi cab here,' or 'Oh I just found y'all.'"
She said that is concerning to her, especially when it comes to people who choose to drive drunk instead.
"To think that young teenagers, or even older adults, still do drive while they're intoxicated, even one or two drinks," she said, "is kinda scary."
This weekend alone in Grayson County there have been eight driving while intoxicated arrests-- four of those were three or more time offenders.
"If you're at a friend's house, then either stay there or have one of them maybe not as drunk as you are," Yeargain said.
Texoma doesn't have services like Uber or Lyft, but there are several cab companies that run through the night, and it is always possible to find a designated driver.
"A lot of people have designated drivers and that's great, but some just don't and we are cheaper in the long run," Yeargain said.
Yeargain's taxi service is a $10 flat rate in Sherman. If someone is caught drunk driving, it could cost up to $10,000—and possibly somebody's life.
"When you're drinking you don't think about, 'I'm gonna cause an accident,'" said Denison resident Frank Schrah.
Experts say someone is hurt or killed in a crash involving alcohol every 20 minutes in Texas.
To avoid being part of this statistic, you can reach the City Cab of Sherman at 903-893-6666. They accept debit and credit cards along with cash, and run until midnight. Another cab service, Ace Taxi, runs throughout the night and can be reached at 903-337-8294.
