Local teen making music matter

DENISON, Tex. (KXII) -- Lexi Rains is a part of the Miss Texas' Outstanding Teen competition, competing in June for the state title.

But for now, she is using the platform to promote an organization she founded called Music Matters.

She raises money for the donation of instruments to schools and gives kids a chance to experience music they not have had before.

How does she do it?

Well, Friday night she put on a show in downtown Denison and she's also a published author.

She wrote a children's book called Harmony the Hippo.

"I wanted to use my story and wanted to put it in a way that kids could understand, maybe that were my age. They could understand, hey, you're not alone. I went through this too. and you don't have to feel scared or inadequate. You can use your specific talents to be successful,"said Rains.

The proceeds from Lexi's book and Friday night's show are all going toward Music Matters, her nonprofit organization.
