SHERMAN, Tex. (KXII) - A man is in jail, accused of stabbing his wife in front of their own children.
Police said a couple took their fight outside before the suspect stabbed his wife several times.
It stopped when some bystanders stepped in and helped.
Around 6 Tuesday night, Charles Hagler was just about to head home after visiting a friend who lives nears North Ricketts and Hillcrest in Sherman.
"We walked out the back door underneath the carport, and we heard screaming," Hagler said.
At first they thought the screams may have been neighborhood kids.
"I looked across the street and saw a man hovering over a woman. It looked like a fight," Hagler said.
Hagler saw the man punching a woman several times.
That's when Hagler's wife saw the suspect holding a knife.
"Our friends' son ran across the street and chased the suspect off," Hagler said. "We ran to aid the victim. She had a very very large gash on the back of her head."
Police showed up and arrested Ethan Carles for aggravated assault with a deadly weapon.
The woman was treated at a hospital for stab wounds to her head, neck, arm and hands.
"It was nice to know we were able to help somebody," Hagler said. "In my opinion, if we would've not come outside, he would've kept hitting her."
Hagler said it was traumatizing.
"We didn't realize someone would have the audacity to do something like that to another human being," Hagler said. "It was vicious, it was just scary."
Carles is still is jail on a $30,000 bond.
Police said the victim is expected to recover.
