A Seminole County man is in jail for rape after police said he met a 12-year-old Garvin County girl on social media.
Lindsay police said they got a report October 11 from a father who said his 12-year-old daughter had been in a sexual relationship with an 18-year-old man.
Kobe Jace Mahoney of Seminole is facing eight counts of first-degree rape.
Chief Clint Wood said Mahoney had met the girl through social media, communicating through Facebook messenger and Snapchat.
"Through those sites, arrangements had been made to meet where the inappropriate relationship started," Wood said.
Police could not say whether Mahoney or the girl was the first to make contact.
An affidavit from a Lindsay officer said Mahoney met with the girl at her home eight separate times for sex while her father was at work.
The affidavit said Mahoney said he thought the girl was 14 or 15 years old, even though the age of consent in Oklahoma is 16.
Police said something like this is rare for the city.
However, they said parents need to keep an eye on what social media sites and apps their kids are using.
"Go through their phone and see who they're talking to and what conversations they're having with these people," Wood said. "Make sure they're not interacting with strangers or people they don't know or they shouldn't be interacting with."
Mahoney is in the Garvin County jail on a $500,000 bond.
He faces up to life in prison if convicted.
Court records show Mahoney will be back in court for a preliminary hearing conference on November 15 at 9 a.m.
