Man indicted after two die in Sherman crash

SHERMAN, Tex. (KXII) - A man was indicted after a crash on U.S. Highway 82 left two people dead.

19-year-old Benjamin Ordaz was indicted Tuesday on two counts of manslaughter and two counts of criminally negligent homicide.

The Sherman Police Department says Ordaz's pickup truck struck the back of a Kia Sportage on U.S. 82 near FM 1417 April 2 around 7 p.m.

The driver of the Sportage, 68-year-old Richard Surface and passenger 71-year-old Janet Surface were flown to a hospital in Dallas for treatment. Janet died from her injuries on April 4, and Richard died April 6.

Investigators determined the cause of the crash to be excessive speed and recklessness.

The crash shut down U.S. 82 for over an hour.

Officials say the investigation is ongoing. Ordez had not been arrested as of Wednesday.
