Man sentenced to 18 years for manslaughter in Denison bar shooting

GRAYSON COUNTY, Tex. (KXII) - A man has been sentenced for shooting and killing a man he called a friend in a Denison bar parking lot in May 2017.

Brandon Jeffery

Inside a car, they found 25-year-old Devin Owens in the driver seat with a gunshot wound in the face.

"This entire situation has been sad from the beginning," said prosecutor Britton Brooks.

Brandon Jeffrey was in the backseat. He told police he pointed the gun at Owens, his friend, thinking it was empty--and pulled the trigger.

Owens died in a Plano hospital days later.

"We're very pleased with the outcome, Britton Brooks worked very hard," said Owens' mother Stefanie Pellman.

There wasn't an empty seat in the courtroom during Thursday's sentencing. Judge Larry Phillips sentenced Jeffrey to 18 years in prison for manslaughter. He faced up to 20.

He pleaded guilty to the charge back in November.

Stefanie and Rick Pellman say it means a new chapter.

"I'm sure Devin is happy his mama's happy," she said. "I'm not gonna be as sad as I was-- I'm gonna grieve him, but no more anger."

Brooks said the sentence sends a message.

"I hope people think twice before getting guns out," he said. "I pray for the families involved."

"This journey is completed and we'll start a new one with his memory and never stop," Stefanie said.
