Motorcycle rider dies after hitting mattress on US 75 in Howe

HOWE, Tex. (KXII) - Howe Police are investigating after a man lost control of his motorcycle on the highway and later died.

The crash happened last Saturday, March 9.

Police say 76-year-old Farmersville resident Benny Watkins was riding his motorcycle on Southbound 75 and Farmington Road.

Witnesses say a mattress had fallen from the back of a pickup truck, and Watkins hit the mattress-- while the driver of the truck sped off.

He died Thursday in a Plano hospital after suffering serious head injuries.

His son Rory Watkins tells us Benny was a Vietnam veteran who loved his family and always had a smile on his face.

"Benny's a great guy. Anywhere he could, he would entertain someone or just sit around and have a good time," Rory said. "He loved people, he loved life, he loved his motorcycles He went out doing what he loved to do."

Howe police are still following up on leads.

Watkins' has a visitation Tuesday from 6:30-8 p.m. at Turrentine Jackson funeral home in Allen.

His funeral is set for 10:30 a.m. at the Fitzhugh Cemetery in Allen.
