HEALDTON, Okla. (KXII)-- Police have released new details Friday afternoon in Thursday night's Healdton shooting.

According to police, it began with a public intoxication call regarding a Healdton man.

"He'd been intoxicated, and they assured me they could get him to go to bed and stuff like that." Healdton Police Chief Johnny Turner said.

Not an hour later, police returned to the same home off of Texas Street.

But this time, the same man, 24-year-old Eric Lackey, had been shot in the stomach.

The suspected shooter, an 18-year-old man who lived at the home, says he shot his mom's fiance because Lackey was hurting her.

"Kind of choking her, pushing her up by her head, lifting her up off the ground with his hand. Looks like he probably slammed her head against the door." Turner said.

Lackey and the suspect's mother were both taken to an Ardmore hospital.

Lackey remains there, but he's expected to survive. The woman has been released.

Police say the shooting appears to be self defense.

"It became clear that the boy was defending his mother," Turner said. "He has a right to protect himself and others in a house he resides in."

Something locals like Clifford Slawson agree with.

"In a situation like that, I don't know, it would have to be something to investigate," Slawson said. "If he's in the clear, clear him of it. If he was defending his mother, turn him loose."

No arrests have been made. The district attorney will decide if either or both faces assault charges.
