Oklahoma tax free weekend begins Friday
Shoppers in Oklahoma can get a little more bang for their buck this weekend with the statewide sales tax holiday and several stores around Ardmore are hoping for a good turnout.
Hayden Hunt is the store manager at The Stag, a boutique clothing and gift store in downtown Ardmore.
She said she and her fellow employees have been busy preparing for a rush of shoppers.
"We're getting stuff ready," Hunt said. "We're putting in our new arrivals and getting lots of stuff for back to school shopping."
This weekend is extra important for The Stag since it is the first big sales holiday since the East Main Streetscape was completed.
"So we're super excited to get everybody down here so they can get a bunch of good school clothes," Hunt said. “We’ve got t-shirts. We’ve got longer shorts for girls. We’ve got shorts for guys. We’ve got a little bit of everything that everybody need from the middle school age to the senior age.”
The Oklahoma Tax Commission said all retailers are required to participate and not collect any state or local sales tax on most clothing and footwear items sold for less than $100.
Mita Bates, president of the Ardmore Chamber of Commerce, said the sales tax in Ardmore is a little more than 9 percent.
"So you can see that's a significant savings of almost 10 percent in any of the qualifying items."
The Chamber is partnering with stores to promote sales and specials to combine with the tax exemption.
The Chamber encourages shoppers to keep money local because dollars multiply and stay in the community when people shop at locally-owned stores.
