One dead, security officer in hospital after Atoka crash

ATOKA, Okla. (KXII) -- One man is dead and a security officer is in the hospital after a crash in Atoka Friday.

Around 11 p.m. Atoka police were called to a head on crash on U.S. Highway 69.

Police say a pickup, driven by 74-year-old Samuel Lovelace, was driving west on Vinita Allen Road when he turned left onto Highway 69.

Lovelace started driving south in the northbound lane and collided with a semi.

The semi caught fire. The driver was able to escape with minor injuries. Lovelace died on the scene.

Minutes later, a Choctaw Tribal security officer who stopped to assist Atoka police with traffic control was struck by a tanker truck.

Police say he has non-life threatening injuries.
