Sherman man loses thousands in scam

SHERMAN, Tex. (KXII) - A Sherman man told police over the weekend he was scammed out of thousands of dollars by someone who told him he was with the U.S. Marshals.

Sherman police say the scam artist claimed there was warrant out for the 29-year-old's arrest, so he paid up $8,000 in bitcoin.

Sgt. Brett Mullen says if you aren't sure about who is calling you, always check it online to see if its real.

"If you believe its a suspicious call you're getting, or a suspicious letter you've received demanding something, do your own research, contact that agency, and try to verify it, especially if it's a warrant that you had no knowledge of," Mullen said.

Mullen says this case remains under investigation.
