Subject featured in "The Innocent Man" to be released from prison
One of the subjects featured in the John Grisham book turned Netflix documentary "The Innocent Man" will be released from prison in December.
Appellate judges have ordered Karl Fontenot, a former death row inmate, to be released from prison December 19.
Fontenot's murder conviction and life sentence were overturned in August.
He and another man, Tommy Ward, were convicted for the 1984 death of Donna Denice Haraway.
Both men allegedly confessed in the days after her murder, but they recanted. The men claimed they were coerced and have since maintained their innocence.
In 2018, three new boxes of evidence were discovered when Ada police moved to a new facility. After that, a federal judge ruled Fontenot should go free or get a new trial.
The state of Oklahoma still has one more appeal that could put Fontenot back in prison.
