Surveillance video shows man cutting 23 stop signs in half

SHERWOOD SHORES, Tex. (KXII) - A Sherwood Shores stop sign saboteur is on the loose after using a pipe cutter to saw 23 stop signs in half early Monday morning.

"On Monday morning, my wife came in and she said 'Hey, the stop signs are down!' I said, 'What do you mean?'"

Raymond Runley's surveillance cameras caught the man shortly after midnight sawing apart a stop sign off Old Shawnee Trail and Menominee Drive in front of his home.

"They were laying in the ditch," Runley said.

His cameras caught the man walking down the street before taking about five minutes to saw stop sign after stop sign.

"It's extremely dangerous for our community because of the traffic control with the stop signs," said Grayson County commissioner Bart Lawrence.

Lawrence said the men from Precinct Four temporarily welded them back up.

"But in order to do it right, we'll have to change all the posts and put them on new posts," he said. "It'll be several thousands of dollars and man time."

Since the damage will likely top $1500, whoever did it faces a felony charge, meaning up to two years in jail and a $10,000 fine.

The sheriff's office doesn't have any suspects. Lawrence thinks someone got angry about getting a stop sign ticket and this was their way of retaliating.

"I thought It was kids out vandalizing until I saw the guy," Runley said. "You could tell he was on a mission."

If you know how to put a stop to this, call the sheriff's office.
