COALGATE, Okla. (KXII) -- A teenage boy is dead after drowning at Coalgate Lake earlier Tuesday evening.

The Oklahoma Highway Patrol said the 17-year-old was at the lake with friends when he went under around 5 p.m. and did not resurface.

Officials said people at the lake searched for him. Coal County Emergency Management, swift water rescue and the sheriff's office also responded.

A trooper ultimately found him two and a half hours later.

It's unclear at this time what caused him to go under.

Officials said swimming in and around the dam area is very dangerous. The reservoir is the city's water supply and it's against city ordinance to swim there.

His identity has not been released.
