Tioga man sentenced to 99 years for wife's murder

Sebastian Roman

GRAYSON COUNTY, Tex. (KXII) - A Grayson County judge sentenced a Tioga man Thursday afternoon to 99 years in prison for killing his wife.

Minutes earlier the same jury found 44-year-old Sebastian Roman guilty of murder. Roman will be eligible for parole after 30 years.

In June 2018, Roman shot and killed 46-year-old Maria Ortiz at their home off Airport Road in Tioga. Deputies arrested Roman at the scene.

During an interview, Roman confessed to shooting Ortiz with a .22 caliber rifle, saying he did not believe the rifle was loaded.

“The victim, Maria Ortiz, was a loving and hard-working mother who did her best to provide for her family," District Attorney Brett Smith said. "It is such a tragedy that her life was cut short in such a horrific way."

Prosecutors say Roman was in the country illegally and would likely be deported if granted parole.
