SHERMAN, Tex. (KXII) -- The wreck happened Monday evening on U.S. Highway 82 at the exit ramp for SH 289.

Sherman Police Sgt. Sam Boyle said it appears a man police identified as Paul Boone was walking west on U.S. Highway 82 when he was hit by a Ford F-250 pickup headed in the same direction.

Boone, 52, was flown to a Metroplex hospital in critical condition.

Boyle said the driver was not hurt.

"He was a little shaken up but he's okay,” Boyle said.

Westbound U.S. Highway 82 was closed for nearly an hour as police investigated the incident.

Boyle said police don't know yet why the man was walking in the road.

Boyle said walking along the highway is not illegal, but there are certain safety precautions people should take, like using the sidewalk or shoulder if there is one.

"You should be walking against the flow of traffic and not with it,” Boyle said. “That is the other big one that people forget."

The accident is still under investigation by Sherman police.
