TISHOMINGO, Okla. (KXII) -- Two people owe nearly a $1,000 each for poaching an estimated 75-year-old alligator snapping turtle in Johnston County.

The Oklahoma Game Wardens said they received a tip that led them to locating two individuals who admitted to the story.

One caught the turtle on an illegal throw line in the Tishomingo Management Unit. Instead of releasing the turtle, the fisherman and another individual decided to shoot the turtle in the head with a 9mm pistol.

The alligator snapping turtle is endangered. Both received citations for $989 plus up to $5,000 for restitution.
