GARVIN COUNTY, Okla. (KXII) - Two people are dead after a freak accident in Garvin County Tuesday night.

The Oklahoma Highway Patrol says an SUV was driving southbound on State Highway 77 around 5:30 p.m. when it passed by a northbound Peterbilt tractor with a trailer hauling rocks.

Unknown to the tractor driver, 42-year-old Billy Melson, a large rock flew off the trailer.

They say the 40 to 50-pound boulder went through the windshield of the SUV, killing passengers 83-year-old Flora Perkins and 89-year-old Wanda Oliver.

The driver of the SUV, 66-year-old Norma Caldwell, was not injured.

Melson was found Wednesday. Investigators say they are convinced the driver did not know what happened, and have not filed charges for leaving the scene.
