TxDOT beginning $8M project Tuesday to expand FM 691 to four lanes

GRAYSON COUNTY, Tex. (KXII) - A big expansion is coming to a popular Grayson County road that is only going to get more crowded.

"When I come back here, I notice all the growth going on in this area."

Eric Heise was visiting his hometown of Denison Sunday, and picked up some Starbucks at the new location on Fm 691 and US 75.

"Every time I come back to visit, it seems like more stuff has popped up," he said.

Heise moved to east Texas but visits Grayson County often and has noticed how quickly its growing.

"It's great because you know the economy is doing well."

FM 691 and US 75 is booming. On the Denison side of the road, there's the Gateway Village development, HeyDay entertainment center being built and the new Starbucks along with TMC.

On the Sherman side, a QuikTrip opened up last year, a new bank is under construction, and a brand new retail center will bring a hotel, food and shopping.

"Any time you've got new development, you're gonna see more people getting off the highway and have increased traffic," said Sherman city spokesperson Nate Strauch.

Strauch said the Texas Department of Transportation is planning a road expansion to keep up with the incoming development.

An $8 million project will expand FM 691 to four lanes from US 75 to FM 131 with a center two-way left turn lane.

"The fact that we will have in the next year the infrastructure to make sure these new facilities can make the most of what they are is a really good thing," Strauch said.

Construction starts on Tuesday. The project should take a little over a year and TxDOT crews plan to add a traffic light to FM 691 and 131 by March 2020.

TxDOT wants to remind drivers to slow down and pay attention to signs because lanes will be closed while crews repave and expand FM 691.
