WHITEWRIGHT, Tex. (KXII) -- Jeremiah Looney, who was voted Whitewright Mayor in May 2016, will serve as a one term mayor.

Looney did not file to run on the March ballot.

Russell Ponder and Jamie Lawrence are both running for the position.

Five city officials resigned during his tenure, and Looney could not be reached for comment.

Looney was an advocate for the legalization of marijuana, and he was also charged with misdemeanor assault causing bodily injury family violence in 2016 in Travis County, Texas.

That case is currently in deferred prosecution status.
