Woman mauled by pack of dogs in Lamar County

LAMAR COUNTY, Tex. (KXII) - A woman is in a Plano hospital after a pack of five dogs mauled her in Deport Saturday morning.

"It was a vicious dog attack by five dogs."

74-year-old Jackie Brooks was visiting her sister at her Deport home this weekend.

On Saturday before noon, Brooks went for a walk on County Road 16080, when a pack of dogs approached her.

"Her sister went down and followed the ambulance," said Brooks' daughter-in-law Laurann McBride. "That's where they found her in the ditch."

McBride tells us a passerby spotted her mother-in-law lying in a ditch and helped her until first responders arrived.

The Lamar County sheriff says she suffered severe injuries and bites on her legs, back and chest. She was taken to a Paris hospital and then flown to Plano.

"My initial reaction is the torture she went through," McBride. "That she even survived."

The sheriff tells us the dogs that mauled her belonged to a resident on the Deport County Road and are being quarantined at a Paris animal shelter.

McBride said they were Cambodian Razorback dogs, but the sheriff's office has not yet confirmed that.

"We have no idea why they were loose. The sheriff told us the person couldn't believe his dogs did it and was remorseful," she said.

McBride is thankful the passerby could help her mother-in-law but is asking for prayers during her surgeries in Plano.

"She loves dogs and animals. She's a very kind, giving person," McBride said. "For this to happen to her is tragic--it's unthinkable."

The sheriff said it's unclear yet if the dog owner will face charges.
