A+ Athlete: Jacque Matthews, Denison

This week's A+ Athlete is Jacque Matthews of Denison High School. Jacque is the Valedictorian in a very competitive class. She's an A.P. Scholar, the President of the National Honors Society, and is involved in several organizations. She sets the bar, and sets the bar high.

"She consistently moves that bar. I think every goal she acheives, just means there has to be a new one," said Denison English teacher Stacy Hricko. I don't think there will ever be an endgame."

"I always put school first, that's the priority. I think, if I'm going to try this hard in school, I might as well try as hard in all my other activities, said A+ Athlete Jacque Matthews. "If one is falling short, I just know I have to pick it up because I have to give my best if I'm going to commit to a team."

On the field Jacque is a key player for the Lady Jackets softball team. She's been asked to play several positions over her career, and played them all well. She's also the captain of the Denison Stingerettes, and involved in theater.

"She chases being better than everyone else, in every thing that she does," said Denison softball coach Jeremy Green. "Softball, school work, no matter what, she will always be the hardest worker. She always wants to beat people at everything she can do."

"I've played softball since I was four years old, it's just been a passion in me because it's a team sport," said Matthews. "It's not an individual thing, you have to support each other. Sometimes you have a bad game, but I know how to cheer my teammates on in the dugout. It's just a family out on the field."
