A+ Athlete: Cooper McCoy, Durant
This week's A+ Athlete is Cooper McCoy of Durant High School.
Cooper is ranked 1st in his class with a 4.0 G.P.A. He's a member of National Honors Society, he placed in the top 3 in several regional curriculum competitions, he's involved in mission trips with his church, FCA, the Special Olympics, Shop with a Cop, and volunteers for fund-raisers for his school district.
He does it all, and does it all well.
"It's kind of the same thing as football, that team mentality. Help one another out in the school system," said A+ Athlete Cooper McCoy. "People help me out and just learning together, striving for the same goal."
"He's dedicated and always respectful and responsible," said Durant Science teacher Natalie Haworth. "He's competitive and that comes into play in the classroom and on the field. He wants to be the best but he doesn't allow that to effect his integrity or honesty."
On the football field, McCoy is one of the top linemen in the state. He was named MaxPreps preseason all-state, he's a top 100 ranked player by VYPE, he was the lineman of the year in 2018, and he's the team captain.
Cooper also excels in powerlifting, and he won the champion of character award.
"Being able to just fight with the brothers beside you to push one another to achieve a goal," said McCoy. "That's great in my opinion and really pushes me to be the best I can be at it."
"One of the highest character guys I have ever coached. He's an extremely hard worker," said Durant head football coach Ray Richards. "Has probably the best work ethic on our football team, he's a great leader. He's a straight A student. Never had a B in his life. He fits all the things you are looking for in an A+ Athlete. He's got it all."
