A+ Athlete: Damon Landis, Plainview

This week's A+ Athlete is Damon Landis from Plainview High School.

Damon continues to build up his academic resume. He ranks 6th in the Senior Class. He's a member of the National Honor Society and Scholastic Team, an Oklahoma Blue Ribbon Scholar and on the Superintendent's Honor Roll.

"It's just a big deal for me because without good grades, I wouldn't be able to do what I do on the field," said Landis. "I feel like athletics are going to be over soon and grades are going to make sure you'll be successful in life."

"He is one of the hardest working students that I've had," said AP Calculus Teacher Melinda Wallace. "Very determined. He will put in the hours in that he needs to. You know, when you're taking AP Calculus, it takes a lot of hours. He puts in the hours that it's going to need to take."

When Damon's not adding vectors in Calculus, he's adding points to the Plainview football team's score as the star kicker for the past four years.

"Football, I just saw it, watched a game one day," Landis explained. "Because I was going to be done, but I saw someone kicking a ball and thought, 'I'm going to try that and see how it goes.' You just have to squeeze it in and find time to do practice when you can. Studying comes first, obviously. But when i can practice, I'm going to go out there and practice but after homework, of course."

"You wish everyone on your team had that motivation," said head football coach Joe Price. "That ability to be involved in some many things and be good at everything. That's the exciting thing about him is that he's just good at everything he does."

Damon is heavily involved in his community serving as a volunteer at Mercy hospital, the local children's Crisis Support and Resource Center, the local soup kitchen, his church and he's a lifeguard.

"He's definitely involved in the community and the school, and he's just a very good representative of Plainview High School," said English teacher Christy Parham.

"I just found out that I really love helping people," said Landis. Volunteer work was a good way to give back to the people of Ardmore."

And that's why Damon Landis is this week's A+ Athlete.
