This week's A+ Athlete is Kate Popowski of Savoy High School.
Kate is an A-honor roll student that excels in science, winning 1st place in UIL Chemistry and taking top honors at TMSCA Physics. She's the President of her class, the Beta Club President and serves as a student adviser.
"She's a natural leader," said teacher Dusty Burkhalter. "I think she's a student and an athlete that kids look to. Her motivation and desire to be successful drives those around her to do the same thing."
"Grades are important to me because they not only matter now but they matter to whatever else I want to do in life," said Popowski. "I want to start now so I can create good habits to carry on and keep me going through college."
Kate is a multi-sport star at Savoy, where she is a key part of the Cardinals volleyball team and softball team. She runs track.and has become a team leader in all that she competes in.
"She encouages her teammates," said volleyball coach Kristi Tallon. "She praises them when they do well, and she holds herself to a high standard, as well, to be a good teammate and to lead by example.
Community service is a big part of Kate's life. She has participated in Relay for Life and toy drives. She has served food to first responders, and she helped organize a relief effort for Hurricane Harvey victims.
"Just seeing the devastation that happened on the Texas coast just makes you want to help people when you know that if that were your situation, you would want to be helped," said Popowski.
And that's why Kate Popowski is this week's A+ Athlete.
