This week's A+ Athlete is Lainey Jestis from Rock Creek High School.
Lainey aspired to be an A+ Athlete since the fourth grade and built up quite the resume. She ranks in the top ten percent of her class with a 3.85 GPA. Lainey is the president of the Student Council and Senior Class, vice president of the FCA, involved in several community projects and enrolled in duel credit college courses.
"I was fortunate enough to have Lainey in class a few years ago, and she's just such a hard worker," said history teacher Kyle Wingfield. "She's just motivated and has such desire to be successful in the classroom as much as she does on the floor."
"My parents have always taught me that hard work can get you just about anywhere, and it starts in academics," said Jestis. "When I'm going to do something, I'm going to do it right. It starts in the classroom, and I try to take it on the court and in the field as well."
Lainey is a do-it-all athlete. She's a state champion softball player, a state qualifier in cross country, a varsity cheerleader and an all-conference basketball player. For her, each sport has its own lesson.
"Sports have taught me to be a humble winner and a respectful loser," said Jestis. "I've learned to be mentally tough. And it has taught me to also be that mentally tough in the classroom because sometimes a class is going to be hard, but you just have to get through it. And that's how I am in cross country, basketball, cheerleading and softball."
"She's like a coach on the floor," said Wade Johnson, head girls basketball coach. "She looks over to me and relates everything to the kids. It makes things a lot easier for me in transition from our X's and O's, to the bench and to the floor."
After graduation, Lainey plans to attend college and become a dental hygienist. And that's why Lainey Jestis is this week's A+ Athlete.
