A+ Athlete: Maci McMurtrey, Lone Grove
This week's A+ Athlete is Maci McMurtrey of Lone Grove High School.
Maci is a standout in the class room. She is ranked number 1 in her class, she's made the Superintendent's honor every year, she's a member of the National Honor Society, and she has been voted the student of the month multiple times, which makes her easy to have in class.
"It makes life so much easier," said Lone Grove English teacher Deborah Jackson. "If we had 400 Maci's in our classes, our lives would be fabulous every day. She really does take care of business in the classroom."
"I'm really competitive in general in everything I do. It just makes me want to be better, want to be the best," said A+ Athlete Maci McMurtrey. "Knowing that I am at the top, makes me feel good knowing that my hard work is paying off."
That competitive nature transfers over onto the softball field. Maci is a 4-year started for the Lady Horns softball team, she helped lead her team to a state runner up finish in 2017, she's a three time all district second baseman, and was named all-state for the 2018 season. Which comes as no surprise to anyone who has seen her work ethic.
"It's every coaches dream to have an athlete like her that will go play, and you never have to worry about their attitude, you never have to worry about their effort, never have to worry about focus," said Lone Grove softball coach Jimmy Miller. "She's going to be out there and getting after it everyday."
"Honestly, it's just the motivation. I just want to be the best that I can be," said McMurtrey. "Having coaches and parents that are there to push me, and make me want to be better, it just helps a lot knowing that. It helps me strive to be better."
After graduation, Maci will continue her softball career at Cameron University.
