This week's A+ Athlete is Ruri Aguilar of S&S High School.
Ruri is Academic-All District that ranks near the top of his class with a 3.7 GPA, heavily involved in his community by reading to elementary students, helping load and unload buses at the elementary school, helps haul kids to practices, and has even been known to clean the locker room.
But for Ruri, grades are the priority.
"If you have good grades, that means you are a responsible kid," Aguilar said. "You do your stuff, you keep up with everything. I feel like grades reflect a lot about yourself."
"I think students like Ruri just enjoy excelling and I know they are going to have bumps and little hills to cross over throughout their years of high school, college, or life," S&S Math Teacher Michelle Wear said. "But they are willing to face it and crawl over those little bumps on the roads."
On the field, Ruri is a two-time all district football player for the Rams, he's a two-time captain, and the defensive MVP.
He really excels at track where he won district in the 400 and a key member of the 4-by-400 relay team that qualified for regionals.
"He stands for everything you want out of your program, everything right," S&S Head Coach James Gage said. "You know, he does well in the classroom, does what's right, what's asked outside of the school. You know, on the weekend and he's always going to do the right thing. When he comes out to practice, he's the hardest worker day in and day out and on Friday nights, he goes out there and plays as hard as anybody we have."
"Sports has taught me how to be a leader, how to lead by example because especially for the freshman," Aguilar said. "They see what you do so if they see you giving it your all, then they'll follow up with it."
