MOUNT VERNON, Texas (AP) - Former Baylor coach Art Briles is coaching football again in Texas, and he'll be making his return to the high school gridiron right here in Texoma.
The 63-year-old Briles is coaching a high school team in Mount Vernon, a town of nearly 3,000 people about 100 miles east of Dallas. Briles was fired by Baylor three years ago in the fallout from a sprawling sexual assault scandal. Briles has insisted he handled things correctly but job opportunities dried up. He ended up coaching a team in Italy.
Briles has a two-year contract paying him $82,000 per year.
Tom Ramsay, a former state lawmaker, has a real estate office in Mount Vernon. He says Briles deserves "another swing."
The season opener is Friday night on the road in Bonham. The home opener at Don Meredith Stadium in Mount Vernon is Sept. 13.
