It was just 8 months ago when Pottsboro native Justin Lawler got the call that every college football player dreams of getting as he was drafted in the 7th round, number 244 overall by the Los Angeles Rams.
Since then, Lawler has totaled up 6 tackles in his rookie season and finds himself in the 2nd round of the playoffs, playing against the Dallas Cowboys, a team that he grew up watching.
"I've been around The Cowboys my whole life, so it just makes it that much more sweeter for me," said Justin Lawler. "It's going to be exciting, it's going to be fun, and it's going to be sweet to take in for sure."
In Pottsboro Justin found his competitive drive, not just by striking fear into opposing quarterbacks, but on the other side of the ball, hauling in touchdown passes for the Cards.
After his time at Pottsboro Lawler went on to star at SMU making himself one of the best defensive ends in the country. Now he plays under the bright lights of L.A., but one thing that he learned in Texoma that he has always carried with him is his love for the game.
"Football is a fun game, and some people try to take that away from it, as long as you can keep that straight, it's all the same, it's all football," said Lawler. "Obviously, there is a lot more at stake, but it's all fun, and we're just trying to win."
Pottsboro has a population just over 2,000, with a majority of them Cowboys fans, but with one exception.
"Everybody's watching," said Lawler. "I've had a few people text me saying 'Go Cowboys but I'm rooting for number 53.' I've got some family coming and everybody in North Texas will be tuned in and rooting for the Rams, and some for the Cowboys and some for me. We'll love them either way."
Lawler and the Rams will host the Cowboys on Saturday at 7:15 on Fox 12.
