The Ada Cougars captured their record-setting 19th state championship with a 21-14 win over McAlester.
These were good times for the Ada Cougars as they went for their 19th state title in school history. The 1996 championship game was perhaps the peak of their long-time rivalry with McAlester. It was the only time they would meet in the finals.
This Ada team was led by Gary McBroom, who had just replaced his brother Larry McBroom. Larry had left for a job in Weatherford, Texas.
This game would mark Ada's 4th title in row, and five of the last six championships.
Ada would win 21-14 after recovering a late onside kick. This was the last Ada team to win a state championship.
