Sports 12 Rewind: Fred Douglass High School brings 1964 State Title to Sherman

Fred Douglass High School brought home the 1964 state championship to Sherman with a 32-18 win over Conroe.

The Panthers were a very impressive team on the field. Star players like Walter Whitfield, Richard Fuller, Don Campbell and Vernon Holland leading the way.

What they did off the field was much more important. Sherman had two high schools during the time due to segregation. Ed Hunt was the head coach, and he was a huge part in bringing the two schools together back in 1967, ending segregation in Sherman schools.

Hunt would go on to coach at Sherman High for several decades.
