The Gainesville Leopards captured their first state football championship against a loaded Burnet team in 2003.
The game was played at Texas Stadium, as the Leopards took on a Burnet team that was led by former Dallas Cowboys and Texas A&M quarterback Stephen McGee. Burnet also had former Texas Longhorns star Jordan Shipley.
Gainesville didn't flinch. Terrius Purvey and Chris Jones would have huge games on the ground. Gainesville would pull away for the 35-24 win.
Gainesville also had star receiver and defensive back Darcel McBath, who would later play for Texas Tech and the Denver Broncos.
Jeff Cordell was the head coach. Gainesville has reached the state finals five times, but 2003 represents their lone championship.
