The Marietta Indians captured their third state title in school history with a narrow win over rival Ringling in the 1987 Class A Finals.
This was a hot ticket here, with several all-time greats involved. Marietta was ranked number one in the state, Ringling was ranked second. Lavon Hicks the coach at Marietta and Rick Gandy at Ringling.
Hicks brought state title number three to Marietta. They had also won in 1964 and 1967, but this was the only one since then.
Marietta won. 13-12. Ringling would go on later to win 5 titles, but this was Marietta's day, in 1987.
