Sports 12 Rewind: Pottsboro basketball wins the 1972 state title
The Pottsboro Cardinals were at their peak in high school basketball when they won the 1972 state championship.
The Cardinals quick rise to the top of high school hoops was impressive since the school had only opened five years previously in 1967.
These Cardinals had already been to state in 1971, but in 1972, they won the state championship. Pottsboro went 37-0 in the process.
Larry Spruiell was the leading scorer on the team and had 33 points in the title game. Jerry Cassell had 14 points in the final game, while Benny Randles had 10. So many others contribute.
The head coach was Don Dodd who spent several years coaching in Oklahoma as well.
The team came up just one game short the year before. Steve Short was a big part of the 1971 team. The Cardinals came up just 1 point short in a loss to Van Horn.
All was made right in 1972, with a 61-60 win over Garrison.
Between 1970 and 1974, the team went an incredible 120-20.
