Sports 12 Rewind: Van Alstyne plays for the state title in 2001

The Van Alstyne Panthers advanced to the state championship for the first time in school history in 2001.

It was a stormy night in Waco when the Panthers played Blanco in the Class 2A state championship game.

The Van Alstyne defense held Blanco scoreless for much of the game, but two late touchdowns gave Blanco the 16-0 win and the state title.

Randy Matthews was in his first year as the head coach for the Panthers, leading them to the finals.

The rain in Waco lasted the entire game and created a difficult situation to move the football on offense for Van Alstyne.

Van Alstyne would move up to Class 3A the following year.
