Ikram Kureshi, M.D. FAQ
Am I a candidate for weight loss surgery?
If you have a Body Mass Index (BMI) of 35 or higher, or you are 50 or more pounds overweight, and diet, exercise, and medications have not worked, you are a good candidate for weight loss surgery. You can visit our website to find our BMI calculator and to learn more.
How much weight can I expect to lose through weight loss surgery?
You can expect to lose 100-150 pounds of weight from the surgery over a 10-12 month period. With surgery, the weight will stay off permanently.
What is the typical recovery time after surgery?
The surgery is done through 4 or 5 small incisions, so the recovery time is fast. You can expect to stay overnight in the hospital just one night, and most people are back to work in a week.
What does the surgery do to my stomach?
Approximately 80% of the stomach is removed during the surgery, but you will still absorb and digest your food and nutrients the same. The new, smaller stomach will make you full with just a tiny portion of food. Also, hunger and cravings will be reduced significantly.
Are the procedures covered by insurance?
Most insurances will cover weight loss surgery including Medicare. Each individual insurance plan may vary, but our office will verify your insurance coverage prior to your first visit with us.
