Mother organizes 5K in honor of her son

BONHAM, Texas -- A Bonham woman has organized a 5K race this year to honor her late son who was killed in a car accident last year.

Jennifer Kirkpatrick has been friends with the Capehart family for years, and is helping organizing their first annual Do it for Nick 5K, in Nick Capehart's honor.

All the money raised will benefit the Nick Capehart Memorial Cheer Scholarship Fund.

"He was great kid, always had a smile on his face, always so kind and considerate to the younger kids," Kirkpatrick said. "They all looked up to him."

It's that spirit that Capehart's mother, Sherry Capehart said she misses every day.

Capehart died in August in a car accident just three miles from his house.

Soon after, his mother started a scholarship fund to help seniors pursing cheer at the collegiate level.

"I want Nick's legacy to continue to live in others who love cheer as much as he did," his mother said.

Sherry Capehart said the 5K has really taken off with several sponsors, volunteers, and even t-shirts remembering Nick.

Race day is May 14, 2016, Nick's birthday month.

It starts outside the Bonham Warrior Stadium across from the High School.

"So this will be way that we are able to hold an event remembering Nick," she said.
