The East Central University baseball team earned its first victory of the 2016 season, with a Great American Conference split with Southwestern Oklahoma State at Ken Turner Field. ECU took the opening game of the day 13-7 and then fell 2-11.
The Tigers (1-11, 1-2 GAC) saw .500 batting averages from junior Kodiak O'Ravez and senior Kris Molter for the day. O'Ravez garnered three hits, three runs and an RBI, while Molter added three hits, two runs and an RBI.
Sophomore Kyle Britt earned the win on the mound for ECU in game one. Britt threw 5.0 innings, allowed five hits and six runs and struck out four.
The Tigers will now hit the road for two weeks, starting with a three-game series at Northwestern Oklahoma State, Feb. 26-27. A single game is set for Friday, Feb. 26 at 2 p.m. and a double-header is slated to start at noon, Saturday, Feb. 27.
ECU 13, SWOSU 7
The Bulldogs (6-5, 2-1 GAC) got on the scoreboard first, with a single run in the second inning.
The Tigers wasted no time to respond, going ahead 7-1 after the bottom of the second. Molter started the innings with a home run to center. After an out, the bases were loaded with walks to redshirt junior David Fernandez and junior Trevor Huie and a single from junior Kodiak O'Ravez.
Junior J.T. Stevenson earned two RBIs with a single through the right side and junior Riley Roberts added a third with a single. The bases were reloaded with a walk to junior Thomas McGarry. Runs were then scored when Molter was hit by a pitch, junior Kaleb Matthews walked and Fernandez was hit.
SWOSU countered with three runs in the third to cut the deficit to 7-4.
However, the Tigers added four more runs in the fourth to push the lead to 11-4. McGarry started the inning with a home run to right center. The bases were loaded on singles from Molter and Fernandez and a walk by Huie. O'Ravez earned an RBI on a ground out and Stevenson sent two home with a single to right.
The Bulldogs scored two runs in the fifth and one in the sixth to cut the disadvantage to 11-7.
ECU added two more runs in the eighth, on a single by O'Ravez and a double from Roberts for the 13-7 final.
SWOSU 11, ECU 2
SWOSU started the scoring in the second game with two runs in the first and three in the third for a 0-5 lead.
The Tigers cut into the deficit with two runs in the bottom of the third. O'Ravez singled, Stevenson added a bunt single and the pair ended up on second and third due to a wild pitch. That allowed Roberts to earn an RBI with a sacrifice fly to left and McGarry to add the second with a single to right.
The Bulldogs added to their lead with a run in the fifth and a six-run sixth inning for a 2-11 final.
