The East Central University softball team split the final day of the four-game series with Southern Arkansas, falling 1-7 in game one and winning 8-0 in five innings in the final game.
The Tigers (19-12, 16-7 GAC) were led by redshirt junior Peyton Watson, with a .600 average, three hits and one RBI. Senior Kayci Snider added a .500 average, three this and one RBI.
Junior Lacey Paulk earned the win in the circle, throwing a complete game, allowing three hits and striking out one.
The Tigers will have a busy week next week, starting with a Tuesday, April 7 double-header at Southeastern Oklahoma State at 2 p.m. in Durant, Okla. The busy week will continue with the final home series of the season, April 10-11 against Southwestern Oklahoma State. The weekend will feature the annual Senior Day, a National Girl's and Women in Sports Clinic and a 1995 team reunion (April 11).
Game 2 - ECU 8, SAU 0 (5)
The Tigers came out swinging in the bottom of the first, with junior Taylor Davis leading off with a single to right and ending up on third due to an error by the right fielder. Senior Kaile Marcum followed with a bunt single and then stole home. The throw to second was off, which allowed Davis to score from third for the first run of the inning. Junior Jordynn VanPelt added two more runs with a home run to center field for a 3-0 lead.
ECU added two runs in the second for a 5-0 advantage. Senior Samantha McGraw led off with a single and was sent to second on a sacrifice bunt by freshman Hayley Hyatt. Davis then drew a walk and both runners advanced on a ground out by Marcum. That set up VanPelt for two more RBIs with a single to right field.
The Tigers continued to add to their lead with a single run in the bottom of the third. Junior Autumn Suydam started things with a single to short and then stole second. That allowed her to score when senior Kayci Snider hit a single up the middle for the 6-0 lead.
ECU pushed the lead to eight in the bottom of the fourth. Davis hit a double to right field and made a good play at second to allow Marcum to reach on a fielder's choice. The runners were advanced to second and third on a ground out by VanPelt and the first run was scored on a sacrifice fly by redshirt junior Peyton Watson to right field. Suydam sent the final run home when her fly to left was dropped, giving the Tigers an 8-0 lead.
The Tigers defense then held strong in the top of the fifth, allowing no runs to put the run-rule into effect.
Game 1 - SAU 7, ECU 1
The Tigers defense came out strong in the top of the first, with the inning lasting four pitches. ECU then took over on offense to take a 1-0 lead. Junior Jordynn VanPelt started things going with a fielder choice to be in scoring position when senior Lacey Williams-Wenholm sent a double off the wall at left center.
The Muleriders (18-17, 10-13 GAC) countered with a single run of their own in the top of the second to tie the game at one. SAU kept the pressure up and took a lead in the top of the fourth, moving the score to 1-2.
The Muleriders opened the scoring in their favor in the top of the fifth, scoring four runs for a 1-6 advantage. SAU added one more run in the top of the seventh for a 1-7 lead.
