The Austin College men’s soccer team twice had to battle back from a one goal deficit with Andy Johnson tallying with under four minutes to play to force overtime as the ’Roos battled to a 2-2 draw against Birmingham-Southern College on Friday afternoon. The ’Roos are now 3-2-2 on the season.
After 30 scoreless minutes the Panthers struck first with Michael Alfano finding Sean Head for a tally to put BSC on top, but 10 minutes later Joey Alcocer curled free kick over the defensive wall and past the Birmingham-Southern keeper from 30 yards out to knot things at 1-1 heading into the break.
The Panthers did not waste much time grabbing the lead back in the second half as Nicholas Reitmeier punched home a rebound off of a shot by Garner Shivers to make it a 2-1 game, and that is how things would stay until Johnson found himself in the right place at the right time and put the ball in the net after it was bobbled by BSC keeper Alex Levinson to square things at 2-2 in the 86th minute.
That’s how things would stay as the teams settled for the draw with Grant Gosselin making eight saves for Austin College while Levinson made three stops for the Panthers. BSC held a 19-18 shot advantage for the game.
Austin College will host Millsaps College on Sunday at 2:00 p.m. to cap off the first weekend of Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference play.
