SOSU, ECU announce intentions to leave LSC to join new league

Southeastern and East Central made it official, they are leaving the Lone Star Conference to start a new league with several schools from Arkansas and Southwestern Oklahoma State.

SOSU, ECU and SWOSU will join Arkansas Monticello, Arkansas Tech, Harding University, Henderson State University, Ouachita Baptist University and Southern Arkansas University.

The move was expected after several reports surfaced that those schools could go east, and UCO and Northeastern joining the MIAA, a move that is still expected but not yet official.

"I think it's a good move," football coach Ray Richards said. "We were happy in the Lone Star, it's a great league, very competitive. Part of me is sad to leave that, but it's a new day. This is a new conference, a chance to be part of something new and I am excited about that also."

“The intent of the conference is to group together similar institutions in terms of budgets and goals,” said the presidents, chancellors and directors of athletics from the nine institutions in a joint statement. “Furthermore, the conference is intended to be made up of universities that field an intercollegiate football program. Our most important goals in this new endeavor are to limit time away from class and limit our travel costs.”
