COLLINSVILLE, Texas -- Each week during the school year News 12 will bring you a success story of a local student athlete who excels in the classroom and in athletics. It's called A+ Athlete
One Pirates football player not only brings down running backs, he also tackles textbooks.
This week's A-plus athlete is Collinsville's Daniel Lucas, who is ranked 7th in his class with 3.54 GPA.
"In the end there's not going to go much with you except your grades, I mean you can't really take much from your high school football career, or anything like that so, I mean if you have good grades that's what's going to help you out in the long run, " Lucas said.
Said Collinsville teacher Kathy Lantrip: "I think he has a very stable family that helps him and encourages his performance both in the classroom and on the field, so he has supported home, but he also hangs with kids that provide that support."
Daniel is an exceptional individual outside the classroom, too. He volunteers in his community, is bilingual and helps others with English and Spanish, and is two-year starter for the Pirates, where he received all-district honors as an offensive and defensive lineman.
"He plays three positions already this year, he plays two on offense and you know he's just one that will do whatever a coach asks him to do and he's going to give one hundred percent," Collinsville head football coach Danny David said.
After graduation Daniel plans to attend Texas A&M, where he will major in agriculture. And that makes him our A-plus athlete of the week.
