DURANT, Okla. -- This week's A+ Athlete is Alexa Richards from Durant High School. Alexa is a standout guard on the Durant Lady Lions basketball team, where she's a leader on and off the court.
She's a golden glove infielder for the Durant softball team, where she helped the Lady Lions make it to the state tournament. She's a member of the FCA, winner of the Lion Heart award, and in her spare time she coaches a youth basketball team through Upward Sports. She manages to get it all in... And does it all well...
It’s not easy, but I’ve had help from my parents and my sisters, and they just help me do it a lot," Richards said. "It’s hard work but it pays off."
Durant softball coach Aaron Mullens said Richards is a leader. "They look up to her," Mullens said of Richards' teammates. "She doesn’t have to say anything."
When she's not playing sports, Richards is a 4.0 student. She is in the top 10 percent of her class. She's a concurrent student at Southeastern, and is taking more college courses than high school classes.
She's on the superintendent's honor roll, and she was the homecoming queen, too.
Not only do we set expectations for our students, but she sets high expectations for herself and works very hard and diligently to achieve that," Durant principal Cheryl Conditt said.
Mullens said it is Richards' competitive nature that makes her successful. "She’s a very competitive person," he said. "If she gets a 99 on a test, she wants a 100."
And that's why Alexa Richards is this week's A+ Athlete.
