This week's A-Plus Athlete comes from Prairiland High School.
Senior Katy Wilkins is ranked number one in her class, the FFA President, and Beta Club Member, who credits her academic passion to some guidance from her parents.
"Ever since I was little, that (academics) was the main focus no matter what," Wilkins said. "And so they were the main focus, and they (parents) would make me make good grades and I didn't really like it at first. But now they don't even pressure me, it's just really myself."
Her English teacher, David Phillips said Katy is very motivated academically. "Katie's a very good student, and she's very motivated," Phillips said. "She's been diligent about getting her assignments in and does very quality (work)."
Wilkins also stands out athletically. She plays middle blocker for the Patriots volleyball team, and was named offensive player of the year for her district in 2013, She also runs track, and qualified for state in the 800-meter run last year. Katy loves getting a chance to excel on athletically, and it shows.
"It's really cool," Wilkins said. "I just want to help my team the best I can. It's something I like to do and I just work harder all the time"
Her coach, Brandon Oats, said he was proud of Katy for her accomplishments in athletics. "There's a lot of expectations and she's lived up to all of them," Oats said. "She's done everything I've asked her to do from here sophomore year up until now And couldn't be more proud of everything that she's done for us."
Katie also is very involved outside of school, she's very active in the community including Meals on Wheels and Toys for Tots.
She plans on heading to Texas A&M after graduation and wants to major in accounting. Excellence in both athletics and Academics is what makes Katy Wilkins this weeks A+ Athlete.
