AC Softball splits with Millsaps

The Austin College softball team split its first Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference doubleheader of the season against Millsaps College on Friday night, taking a 7-6 extra inning victory in game one before falling 13-1 in game two. The ’Roos are now 10-16 overall on the season and 1-1 in SCAC play.

Austin College grabbed a quick 1-0 lead after one inning in the first game when Stefanie Faith drew a walk with the bases loaded, and that would remain the score until Katie Birdwell tripled with two outs to plate a run for the Majors and knot the game at 1-1 in the top of the fourth. The ‘Roos would quickly reclaim the lead in the bottom half of the inning when Chelsea Delaney ripped a single through the left side to score Suzanne Beltran and make it a 2-1 game heading into the fifth.

The margin grew to 4-1 after five innings when Sam Smith doubled home a run and Beltran added an RBI single, but the Majors cut would score four unanswered runs in the sixth and seventh innings to take a 5-4 lead heading into the bottom of the seventh.

However, the ‘Roos would battle back and send the game into extra innings tied at 5-5 on an RBI single by Delaney with two outs in the bottom of the seventh. After neither team was able to score in the eighth, Emily Spicer singled home the go ahead run for the Majors to make it a 6-5 ballgame in the ninth, but Faith blasted a homer deep over the left field fence and Carolyn Stone would come home on a dropped line drive with two outs in the bottom half of the inning to give the ‘Roos a 7-6 victory.

Delaney finished the game 3-for-5 with two RBI while Charlotte Trudell, Smith and Beltran each had a pair of hits. Sam Matulis got the win after going the distance, surrendering six runs, four earned, on 12 hits.

In game two, the Majors quickly plated three runs in the top of the first inning before the ‘Roos were able to turn a double play with the bases full to get out of a jam, but Millsaps would plate five more runs in the second highlighted by a three run homer from Megan Yglesias to make it an 8-0 game. Austin College would finally get on the board in the bottom of the third on a sacrifice fly by Faith to make it 8-1.

Millsaps answered with four runs in the top of the fourth to make it a 12-1 game, and Emily Spicer’s solo homer in the fifth pushed the deficit to 13-1. The ‘Roos would be unable to close the gap in the bottom half of the inning to make it a 12 run final margin.

Four different players had a hit apiece for the ‘Roos with Faith leading the way at 1-for-2 with an RBI. Amanda Peiser took the loss after giving up three runs on three hits in 0.1 innings of work.

The ’Roos and Majors square off for another doubleheader again tomorrow at Old Settlers Park with the first game scheduled to begin at 1:00 p.m.
